We are now able to use technology to capture essential data on informal settlers in Dhaka city. The support of Habitat for Humanity Australia was key in the use of geographic information system mapping to develop a comprehensive database on 25 slums in wards 2 and 6 in Dhaka City. More than 20 people from the local government, non-government organizations and Dhaka Water and Sanitation Authority have been trained by the Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Service of Bangladesh Government in carrying out geographic information system mapping. The data that has been collected will be used in urban planning and sustainable development by Dhaka North City Corporation. On June 20, Habitat Bangladesh handed the equipment to the Dhaka North City Corporation for maintaining the database. In the meantime, Habitat Bangladesh is mapping urban informal settlements in Dhaka in partnership with the government’s Center for Environmental and Geographic Information Service and Dhaka North City Corporation.
